China Officially Approves D-Allulose as a New Food Ingredient

2025-06-26

On June 26,2025,China's National Health Commission officially approved Allulose, and on July 2nd,it was announced as one of the latest new food ingredients.
Allulose is a naturally occurring six-carbon ketose found in plants such as figs, kiwis, and wheat. It is a C-3 epimer of D-fructose.With about 70%of the sweetness of sucrose,it contains only 0.4 kcal/g—approximately 10%of the calories of sucrose. Its glycemic index is nearly zero, meaning consumption does not cause significant postprandial fluctuations in blood glucose or insulin levels.According to the approval regulations, the Allulose content in products must be≥98 g/100 g,and the recommended daily intake should not exceed 20 grams.
Research indicates that Allulose can help lower blood glucose levels by inhibiting glucose absorption in the small intestine and suppressingα-glucosidase activity, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and effectively flattening postprandial blood glucose peaks.Additionally,it regulates lipid metabolism by inhibiting lipogenic enzyme activity or enhancing lipase activity, promoting fat breakdown, reducing lipid accumulation in the blood and liver, and demonstrating potential in combating obesity.Furthermore,Allulose exhibits certain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may offer protective effects against neurodegenerative diseases.
In terms of applications,Allulose serves as an ideal sucrose substitute in a wide range of food and beverage products, including carbonated drinks, juices, tea beverages, and yogurt. It provides a clean, sweet taste while improving the overall flavor profile. In baked goods such as cakes and biscuits,it contributes appropriate sweetness and color while helping to optimize texture. Moreover,it can be used in candies and chocolate products to support the development of low-sugar product lines.
