What is CMC-Na?
Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) is a derivative obtained by carboxymethylation modification of cellulose, belonging to the most important ionic cellulose gums. CMC-Na is usually a white to pale yellow fibrous or granular powder, odorless and tasteless, and has strong hygroscopic properties.
It is readily soluble in water and forms a high-viscosity, transparent colloidal solution under neutral or alkaline conditions, but is insoluble in acids and alcohols. CMC-Na has a melting point of approximately 274°C and a density of approximately 1.6 g/cm³. It exhibits good thermal and chemical stability, but prolonged heating at temperatures exceeding 80°C can lead to a decrease in viscosity.

Preparation Method
The preparation of Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium mainly involves two steps: alkalization and etherification of cellulose. First, cellulose undergoes alkalization, reacting with sodium hydroxide to form alkali cellulose. Subsequently, the alkali cellulose undergoes etherification with chloroacetic acid to generate CMC-Na. This reaction system must be kept alkaline, and the reaction mechanism is nucleophilic substitution.
Depending on the etherification medium, industrial production can be divided into two main categories: aqueous methods and solvent methods. Aqueous methods use water as the reaction medium and are suitable for producing low- to medium-grade CMC-Na products, such as detergents and textile sizing agents. Solvent methods, on the other hand, use organic solvents as the reaction medium and can produce high-quality, medium- to high-grade CMC-Na products.
Application Areas
1. Food Industry
In the food industry, food-grade sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) is widely used as a thickener, emulsifier, and stabilizer. Its excellent thickening and emulsifying stability significantly improves the quality and taste of food. For example, in dairy products, CMC-Na stabilizes yogurt beverages and increases the viscosity of yogurt systems; in the production of bread, steamed buns, and other pasta products, its hydration helps maintain the texture and extend shelf life; and in the production of jelly and jam, the gelling effect of CMC-Na helps the product form better. Furthermore, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose powder can also be used as an edible coating material, compounded with other thickeners, and applied to the surface of food to achieve a preservation effect.
2. Petroleum Industry
In the petroleum industry, CMC-Na is an important component of drilling mud treatment agents. Drilling mud containing CMC can form a thin, strong, and low-permeability filter cake, effectively protecting wellbore stability and improving drilling efficiency. Meanwhile, the thickening and suspending properties of CMC-Na can improve the flowability of drilling fluids and reduce friction and torque during drilling.
3. Pharmaceutical Industry
In the pharmaceutical field, Carboxymethyl cellulose powder is used as a thickener and emulsifier due to its non-toxic, odorless, and non-mold-resistant properties. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, CMC-Na can regulate the viscosity and flowability of drugs, improving drug stability and bioavailability. Furthermore, its excellent film-forming properties also make CMC-Na suitable for use in drug coating and sustained-release formulations.
4. Other Industries
CMC Sodium is also widely used in textiles, printing and dyeing, papermaking, construction, coatings, ceramics, and many other industries. In the textile printing and dyeing industry, CMC-Na acts as a sizing agent to improve fiber smoothness and weaveability; in the papermaking industry, it is used as a sizing agent to improve paper strength and water resistance. In the construction industry, CMC Na can be used as a concrete retarder to regulate concrete setting time and improve workability.
Future Development and Environmental Characteristics
With global economic development and increased environmental awareness, the market demand for Carboxymethylcellulose, as a green and environmentally friendly chemical raw material, is constantly growing. Carboxymethylcellulose sodium is biodegradable, and its waste can be degraded by microorganisms in nature, reducing its impact on the ecosystem. Furthermore, the production process of CMC-Na is gradually moving towards greener and more environmentally friendly methods, using non-toxic and harmless raw materials and environmentally friendly processes to reduce wastewater and exhaust emissions.
In terms of innovative applications, sodium CMC is continuously expanding into new fields. In the field of novel materials, CMC-Na is used to prepare high-performance bio-based materials and nanocomposites; in agriculture, its excellent water absorption and retention capabilities help improve soil structure and promote plant growth; in the pharmaceutical field, CMC-Na serves as a drug carrier and controlled-release material, improving drug targeting and therapeutic efficacy.
In summary, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose plays a vital role in modern industry due to its unique physicochemical properties, wide range of applications, and environmentally friendly characteristics. With continuous technological advancements and the expansion of its application areas, the market prospects for carboxymethyl cellulose powder will be even broader, and its role in sustainable development will become increasingly prominent.
