The Amazing Uses and Properties of Polyanionic Cellulose

Polyanionic cellulose powder is a polymer material with excellent heat stability, salt resistance, and antibacterial properties. Mud fluids formulated with it exhibit good water loss reduction, inhibition, and temperature resistance, and are widely used in oil drilling, especially in brine wells and offshore oil drilling.

Main Applications

High-purity PAC has a wide range of applications and can replace carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in many industries, providing more stable performance. For example:
- Textile Industry: As a sizing agent for lightweight yarns, replacing starch.
- Paper Industry: Added to pulp to improve the longitudinal strength and smoothness of paper, enhancing its oil resistance and ink absorption.
- Daily Chemical Industry: Used in the formulation of soaps and synthetic detergents.
- Rubber Industry: Used as a latex stabilizer.
- Drilling Industry: As a filtration loss reducer and thickener.
- Other Applications: In the fine chemical processing of coatings, food, cosmetics, ceramic powders, leather, etc., it is used as a thickness modifier, emulsion stabilizer, crystallization inhibitor, thickener, binder, suspending agent, water-retaining agent, dispersant, etc.

Physical Properties

PAC is a white to pale yellow powder or granules, odorless and non-toxic, highly hygroscopic, and readily soluble in both cold and hot water.

Chemical Properties

*High Degree of Substitution: Substitution value between 0.85 and 1.4.

*Heat Stability: Aqueous solutions are stable below 80°C; even at temperatures approaching 150°C, it retains a certain viscosity for approximately 48 hours.

*Acid, Alkali, and Salt Resistance: Stable within a pH range of 3-11, suitable for various harsh environments.

*Good Compatibility: Miscible with other cellulose ethers, water-soluble adhesives, softeners, resins, etc.; as the degree of substitution exceeds 1.2, it gradually exhibits oil solubility.

*Good Solubility: Dissolves quickly in both cold and hot water with simple stirring equipment; hot water dissolves even faster; fast-dissolving PAC dissolves completely within minutes, greatly improving ease of use and production efficiency.

* Excellent stability: PAC aqueous solutions exhibit light stability, resulting in a longer shelf life; they also possess strong resistance to bacteria and mold growth and do not ferment.

* Extremely low usage: Due to PAC's high degree of substitution and high stability, its usage under the same conditions is only 30%-60% of that of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), significantly reducing operating costs for businesses. This provides a high cost-performance advantage and saves on raw material consumption, resulting in significant economic and social benefits.

* Environmental friendliness: The main raw material for polyanionic cellulose (PAC) is refined cotton, which has no pharmacological effects and is physiologically harmless. Its production process is green and environmentally friendly.

* Suitable for deep well high-temperature operations: Polyanionic cellulose can be used in deep well high-temperature downhole operations.
