Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose: Introduction and Uses

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) is an organic compound, a carboxymethylated derivative of cellulose, and the most important ionic cellulose gum. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is the sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose formed by the reaction of cellulose with sodium monochloroacetate under alkaline conditions. It is a white to slightly yellow fibrous or granular powder, insoluble in ethanol.

Main Uses: It can be used as a coating material, a disintegrant for tablets and capsules, a binder, stabilizer, suspending agent, thickener, and water-absorbing agent for tablets. Due to its thickening properties, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is widely used in oral and topical pharmaceutical preparations.

Application Type Viscosity Degree of Substitution Purity Moisture
Medical Grade PM7 2% Soln 950-5400 0.65-0.98 ≥99.5 ≤8%
PH7 2% Soln 6800-16200 0.65-0.98 ≥99.5 ≤8%

Role of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose in Pharmaceutical Formulations

1. Thickener: Pharmaceutical Grade CMC increases the viscosity of drug solutions, thereby improving the taste and user experience.

2. Emulsifier and Stabilizer: Pharmaceutical Grade CMC helps oil-water phases mix better and maintains the stability of emulsions, which is crucial for some pharmaceutical formulations requiring emulsification.

3. Suspension Agent: In suspensions, Pharmaceutical Grade CMC effectively prevents the sedimentation of solid particles, maintaining uniform drug dispersion.

In oral medications, especially those requiring sustained-release effects, the application of CMC (carboxymethyl cellulose) for pharmaceuticals is very common. It can be used as a drug carrier, allowing for the slow release of drugs in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing drug degradation by stomach acid and prolonging the duration of action in the body.

Besides oral medications, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose also functions in topical medications. In addition to these applications, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can be found in many other personal care products, such as cosmetics, soaps, and shampoos. Its versatility and stability make it an indispensable component in many products, providing consumers with a more convenient and comfortable user experience.
